Hit or Miss: April 2010

The Prodigal God: Can’t decide if this one is a HIT or MISS. It is written in an easy to read format. It dissects Jesus’ parable of the Lost Son, often called the Prodigal Son. I did learn that “prodigal” does not mean “lost or wayward” but means “recklessly spending all you have.” It is hard to read though when you see yourself in every word on the page. Most of the message I have heard before, known and understood intellectually. It still is not easy to face yourself. The book is interesting for anyone who wants to really learn to be a Christian rather than being religious.

The Blindside: My kids had been wanting to see this movie. We decided to wait til it came out on video and watch it together (which didn’t exactly happen!) The story itself was ok. The overall movie I would say was neither a HIT or MISS.

An Instance of the Fingerpost: This book was loaned to me about two years ago and I finally got around to reading it! The story is interesting in that it is the same story told four times by four different characters, each telling from his own perspective. It had lots to think about. Though there is a lot of history that I did not know, I did find myself getting drawn into the story. At first, I was not sure if the book was a HIT or MISS. I had a hard time getting in to it (it took three times before I actually got past the first few pages) and it was hard keeping up with things (though when I realized that each character told his own view, I decided I did not have to keep up with everything!) The more I think about it, the more I think the book is probably a HIT.
