educational toys make learning fun
Posted by madameblogalot at 8:15 pm in home, kids & family, just for fun, life, reviews

I have always been a proponent of educational toys. And I think there are toys that can be educational in many forms and for all ages. I have seen toys that help with math skills, logic and creative thinking skills, reading skills and ones that foster musical talent . Every time I saw a toy that I knew my kids would like and that I also felt had great educational value and benefits, I would consider it an investment. And there were games that we all enjoyed playing together.

We have found board games, word games, musical games and even computer and video games that fall into this category. I love the ones that include interaction with others, like the board games. Some video games can be multiplayer, making them beneficial in that area as well. Anytime a child can play to help concrete something in his/her mind, it is a way to learn lessons without the pain and frustration that can sometimes build up when learning new and difficult concepts. I know that when my kids were young, if they were having a hard time with a new math concept, we would play games that related to that to help embed ideas into their brains. These kinds of educational games and toys can also help them learn and understand abstract concepts.

exotic vacation
Posted by madameblogalot at 4:56 pm in just for fun, life, reviews

My husband and I had a nice little vacation last week, just the two of us. It was a much needed get away. Today, when I came across the website for a Costa Rica resort, I wanted to take a look. As the site began loading its gorgeous photographs, my husband walked in. He took one look and asked if I was planning our next trip!

The Florblanca looks like a lovely destination. The photos of the sea and surrounding beaches look truly inviting. The villas look like a place I would never want to leave! The open area overlooking the jungle hosts a two person hammock just right for relaxing together and enjoying the sights and sounds. The bathroom looks like an amazing garden area. The Honeymoon House offers personal beach access and a complete kitchen. Rates start at $350 and the current special states when staying four nights, the fifth night is free.

Activities include lovely beaches, walking and jogging trails, cycling, yoga, fishing, swimming pool and what looks like the ultimate in luxurious relaxation. Though I did not see it listed, it looks like it would be a gorgeous place for scuba diving as well.

window treatments
Posted by madameblogalot at 7:08 pm in home, kids & family, life, reviews

One thing my daughter had trouble finding to her liking while decorating her room was window treatments. She didn’t like most of the curtains we found. They were too heavy or too gaudy or just plain did not meet her tastes. But my mom was able to find some sheer panels that have worked perfectly for her. While these are great in her room, most of our windows are covered with cheap blinds, which work perfectly well for us.

I love the blinds because they blend in with any decor and color scheme. It is easy to find blinds in nearly every color and they are one of the cheapest window treatments to utilize. They are easy to use and maintain. I used to be pretty good about taking them down once a year to spray them down with the water hose! This has gone by the wayside, but all in all our blinds have held up well.

chemical proof gloves?
Posted by madameblogalot at 3:11 pm in life, reviews

Living in an area where oil refineries and chemical plants are abundant in every neighboring town, and even having close family members who work in such places, you think I would be aware of what the employees are exposed to each day. But while at physical therapy the other day, I heard some men talking about their work places. One was retired while the other still works at a refinery in the area. They were talking about the harsh chemicals they work with.

In the conversation they talked about the stains and odors that get on their overalls and how these items have to be washed separately from other clothes. I never thought about the chemicals getting onto their skin either, until I saw some super heavy duty work gloves. These are not the kind used to work on the car or in the garden, these are PVC-coated-liquid-proof-vinyl-coated gloves . The kind that are resistant to chemicals, oil and grease and also abrasive resistant. These are the kind of gloves to hold up to the harsh elements of every day life in oil refineries and chemical plants. That is some heavy duty strength for some heavy duty jobs!

online financial planning
Posted by madameblogalot at 1:08 pm in life, reviews

It seems as if everyone has been affected by the downturn in the economy. Even regular folks are considering the need for financial advisement. Investing may feel risky, but planning for a secure financial future is something most everyone desires. Finding a financial advisor may seem like a risk, in that you have to “spend money to save money”. But a true financial advisor is an investment in your financial future; s/he is going to be worth more than what you invest in him/her. On the Vaerdi Financial homepage I learned that there are advisors out there with the same perspective.

The advisors here base their financial planning on your personal goals. They base their plan on six steps, including relationship, evaluation, implementation, and monitoring. They like to think with an “old-fashioned” mindset, their commitment to the financial security of their clients. And they are “contemporary” enough to be able to build this relationship using today’s technology including online resources, which in itself is a money saving way to conduct business. This is not a one-time assessment, but an ongoing relationship. Because of this, they have implemented a variety of ways for collecting payment, from hourly rates, to monthly retainers, to yearly fee agreements. They also do not sell any investment products or insurance, helping to maintain lower costs to better aid in meeting their clients financial goals.

Reputation Management Services
Posted by madameblogalot at 2:54 pm in life, reviews, something new

I must say that I was not sure what Reputation Management Services were when I first heard about it. I mean, of course the name in itself gives an idea of what it means, but I wasn’t sure just whose reputation these management services could help salvage? Is it businesses, students, business people, the every day Joe whose Facebook image is causing problems?

Come to find out, Reputation Management Services are available for businesses who are finding themselves on the receiving end of bad press. Now contrary to some popular beliefs, any press is not always good press. In today’s world of social networking, thousands of blog posts generated in a moment of time, and the other ways we voice our daily interactions-both good and bad-a bit of bad press can go a long way in a short time.

In the past if someone was unhappy with services received by a company, they would tell their family, friends and co-workers. This might not mean too many dollars lost for a major company. But with today’s “word of mouth” extending around the globe in a matter of seconds, Reputation Management Services might be a good resource for just about any size company. These services can provide both proactive and reactive reputation management.  Each case is unique in approach and pricing. Customer quotes and free evaluations are available to those company’s willing to invest in maintaing their positive reputation.

cleansing conditioner
Posted by madameblogalot at 4:39 pm in life, reviews, something new

I’ve got one of those heads of hair that is just almost never right. And with all the swim, bike and run training I normally do, my hair gets dried out, discolored and frizzled and frazzled. I do need something that keeps it soft and natural. I have tried a few things that I like and a few that I don’t. I even read about Chaz Dean’s hair care products which are completely natural and are made to leave hair feeling soft and manageable. It is even supposed to help with color retention. It apparently does this without the harsh chemicals found in most shampoos and conditioners. It is a unique formula which is actually a cleansing conditioner.

save money styling your own hair
Posted by madameblogalot at 7:41 am in home, kids & family, life, reviews

Another way many folks are saving money is to get their hair cuts at home. My husband gets his hair cut at least once a month. That adds up quick! If you are unlike my son who has banned haircuts all together, then this could be an easy way to save money. Of course, you will have to invest in good haircutting shears. These can be picked up fairly affordably and will likely pay for themselves pretty quickly.

If you want to test your skills or already have some decent hair cutting and styling skills, adding stylist shears  and even a CHI curling iron can save trips to the beauty salon, all adding up to a little savings over the course of a year. It might be a simple way to save money this year.

dream vacation
Posted by madameblogalot at 7:00 pm in just for fun, reviews

What would be your dream vacation? There are so many places I would love to visit all over this globe. Of course, Europe seems to often be at the top of many people’s list when asked where they would like to travel. Seeing all the fantastical sites, taking in the history, reveling in the food and entertainment…it’s no wonder. I think one European country we would all enjoy visiting would be Scotland. I came across some really cute cottages and log cabins that can be rented by the week. What a peaceful, lovely vacation that would make!

A vacation home would be ideal for families traveling for their summer holidays. I like the pricing for weekly rentals. Staying in a cabin or cottage is more home-like and everyone can relax a bit more. And yet, at the same time, many amenities can be enjoyed, including pools and private hot tubs, fishing, golf and exploring. These cabins are located throughout the United Kingdom from Scotland to Wales, the heart of England to islands in the Channel.

I can imagine us trolling through the green hills and mountains of Scotland, looking for Nessie and exploring the lochs, touring castles and of course, my husband would be thrilled with a round or two of golf in its native home. Maybe one day we will indeed have a European dream vacation come true.

prescription eyewear online
Posted by madameblogalot at 5:34 pm in life, reviews

Since I don’t wear eyeglasses, I do not know how hard it would be to purchase prescription eyeglasses from an online site. I have heard that Eyewear Planet offers many styles of both prescription eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses. They offer many brand names to choose from. I saw that they even sell goggles and shooting glasses. It is easy and convenient to shop online and it might be worth some time to check it out, especially if you already know what style of frames you prefer to wear. Be sure to check out the specials the website is running. You can save from $15-$30. And you get free shipping on all orders over $29.95.
