Yesterday I applied for a part time job. I found the listing on Monster.com. It is for a distributor of hospital gowns. The contractor chooses his/her own hours, so I thought working two or three afternoons a week would maybe work out for me. Of course, this is my thought without having talked to the company. I had to submit a resume to apply for the job. I have not submitted much less written a resume in years. It was kind of weird and funny to put it together.
I did not know exactly what to put on the resume. I looked online for a template . I found a free one, but could not print it for free. So I made my own following the template. I listed many different things on there including working for my mom’s office as a part-time contractor doing various duties, teaching bible classes, distributing magazines, working in a pharmacy fifteen years ago (!), data entry jobs, and even blog writing.
I know. That one may not be appropriate to put on there. But I figure it shows self-discipline and self-motivation. Ha. As for accomplishments, I listed homeschooling, finishing two triathlons and a half marathon.
Are these the kind of things that are appropriate on a resume or am I only presenting myself as unintelligent, too far removed from the real world, a freak, or something…!?

I think your resume sounds awesome - marathons and homeschooling are wonderful accomplishments. But I have no idea what’s “appropriate”, to be honest.

well, that is how I felt. and after looking at the template, I felt it ok to include. and hey, isn’t blogging a way of saying I’m not too outdated?! thanks for the kind words!

It looks to me like a pretty honest resume, the kind I used to like to see from job seekers. It would have gotten my attention!

I like to call it “eclectic”!!

I think it is great, silken. My own resume is kind of odd too. Whenever I have to send it out, I always get this funny feeling inside. I’m having to send it out this week (in two languages) to apply for a visa, and feel rather odd about it. We’ll see how it goes!

Hi Stacey,
You know, I felt the same way putting my resume together this year… it’s very hard to get back out there when you’ve been home for so long. I’m wishing you the best, best best of luck… incidentally, my blog experience was one of the reasons my boss hired me
Oh, I tagged you in a meme if you get time
