there are state approved parent taught courses, so they are not really getting around the requirements. it is interesting. there are some differences between the driving school and the parent taught, it seems. (once we decided to put him in the driving school, I did not research much on the parent taught course) It seems to take longer and the parent must keep paperwork on all course work and driving time. I think some of the parent taught courses are also "graduated licenses" where the student has to spend so much time with certain kinds of driving before moving on to another level (parking lot time, neighborhood driving, main road, etc) again, I did not do lots of research on it, but it seems to be lots of folks I know are doing it, so there is a way to meet state requirements while teaching it at home.

for us, I think it's good that he is learning from us and from his instructors. and then he will of course spend lots of time practicing w/ us before he gets his license (at least six months)

another trend I am noticing, lots of parents are waiting longer before letting their kids drive. I know several 16 yr olds who are not driving or in a driving course (which is fine, but a different trend I think than in the past)

With drivers ed being a requirement in many states for getting one's license sooner rather than later, how are the people teaching their own kids to drive getting around the need for them to be in (or also in) the formal, approved class.

My folks taught me how to drive, but I also had to take the class or else wait several years longer before I had the license.
