this kind of came up in bible class last night. the comment made in class made me think something pretty close to what you've said here. the comment was that kids are not held accountable these days. it made me think how my dad talks about growing up and everyone had very similar values. anyone in town would keep him in line: community leaders, teachers, neighbors, etc.

One problem today for parents is that there are fewer good role models in society that always used to reinforce the teaching at home. Political leaders seem to be nearly universally corrupt, sports figures are always in trouble with the law, extreme permissiveness seems to get the attention if not approval of the media, advertising is mostly lies and spin, etc. The values of society in general have changed dramatically and in my opinion, not for the better. It's tough any more to get any good examples of good behavior.

maybe that is why parenting is such a struggle these days. we are not naturally connected to other folks. my mom says she wasn't so stressed out by every little step she took as a parent like so many of us are these days. maybe it is a part of our fragmented society. I think the saying is still true that it takes a village to raise a child. it's just that we are not so sure about our village anymore...

When I look at the local community now as contrasted to what it was when I was little, people seem so much more fragmented in their use of time. Somehow, getting together like you did with your friend before she moved away seems harder and harder to do. It's wonderful when such relationships click and people can talk about mutual concerns. I wish they scheduling those kinds of times was easier so they just more naturally happened rather than having to pencil people in on the calendar amongst the thousand other things competing for everyone's ttime.
