pick your battles
Posted by madameblogalot at 1:10 pm in home, kids & family, just for fun, life

I hear this all the time raising teenagers. I don’t really like this advice, though I do know what people mean when they say it. For example, the only two battles I don’t fight (too much) are the mess in the rooms (has to be taken care of regularly though) and hair.

This summer, my son got a mohawk. Technically, a fauxhawk. It is cut in mohawk style but is more of a fade and he doesn’t spike it up. My daughter told me today that as she was getting her hair cut yesterday, she saw someone getting pink highlights and she thought that would be so cool!! WOW! I had no idea she was into that. And lucky for us, she hates pink.

I am lucky though. So far there have been no requests for tattoos or ear rings. yet.

  1. Rooms have doors or a reason. ;O) When mine were at home, the condition of their rooms only became an issue for one of the three, who always seemed to cross the line between “lived in” and “pig sty.”

And hair has never been worth a fight. The funny thing is that the only one who ever really had weird hair was my son. When he was in 8th grade, he spent more time in front of the mirror than both of his sisters combined. He’d goop tons of gel on his hair and then comb it straight back. As it dried, it turned into a hard, ugly helmet, but he thoght he looked pretty hot. And it had to be PERFCET –one slight imperfection in the do and he’d start all over…

Before they were fully on their own, we had one tattoo (our son), pierced ears on the girls, and one secretly pierced belly button that I have to admit looked pretty cute, but still ticked me off.

  2. Interesting. Over the years the fads change but the challenges remain.

  3. so beth you mean we will all survive this?? :) I do need to hear that!

I am trying to not make a big deal about the fads. but it is a struggle for me. I am truly a control freak.
