text-a-prayer

I have written before about our family’s tradition of reading a scripture and saying a prayer together before our son heads out for his day at school. We feel this is an important way to share our values and a great way to start the day in focus.

My neighbor just started junior high this week. As I ran by the bus stop this morning, he showed me his school ID and as I came back by on my cool down, he was reading a text message on his phone. He said his mom sends him a prayer every morning!

I love it! his mom has to leave early for work and junior high starts the latest of all the schools here. So, even though his mom can’t be with him in person before he gets on the bus, she is making sure to send him a message to help him keep his focus and know that he is thought of, cared for and loved. His mom has found the perfect way (especially for teens!) to keep in touch and to help springboard his day on the right foot.

  1. Wow! That’s such a thrilling thought!

  2. It’s great to keep the Lord and his word on one’s mind. I try to read two pages of the Bible every night and have been doing so for so long that I have read it several times over. Every time I find that I am learning something new.

  3. montucky-I know! it was so neat to hear him reading it aloud and then sharing that with me. I loved the encouragement it gave me, so I know it must be great for the boy!

sire-I too try to read from the bible every day. we do as a family, but I also do it on my own. I have been trying to instill this w/ my kids as well. mostly, I still have to remind them. we also try to make sure that we use the Bible as a basis for our daily living (what good reading if not applied?) we bring up things in “teachable moments” w/ our kids as often as we can. the other day, my son used it toward my husband. hey, at least we know he is applying it! :)

  4. Texting is really big over here in Asia. It is a more introverted culture, and it seems some people prefer that method of communication. (It is also busier, so you can text someone without interrupting what they are doing, and they can answer when they are free.) I have a lot of friends who text scriptures to one another, but have not thought of texting prayers before.
    Good idea.

  5. I really like the idea too. right now, texting is hard for me since I am so slow at it. but using it to reach people is a great tool!

  6. I like that kind of texting! Like you though, it would take me forever to type it out. Still a neat idea.

  7. thanks Holly! yes, it takes me forever to text! but however we can meet our kids and get them where they are at is worth learning, I say!
