I know very well what you are talking about. We stand up to the hip in water by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, down in Key West! And this time, the island was very lucky not to get hit from Ike, they were close to that! In hard times you learn to appreciate good neighborhood, that's a very great and nice experience.
