all press is good press

I was thinking of the saying that “all press is good press” and wondering if it is true. I came across a situation in which I was advised not to blog about it because even the “bad press” of a negative blog post (or several from many disgruntled bloggers) would only serve to help the entity being blogged about. I wondered about that. Especially in light of all the “bad press” I have been giving to Comcast in my other blog. It is the only way I know to spread the word about the poor service we have received and also served as a great way for me to “vent” about it. As I was thinking about the “all press is good press” I came across an article on the stage two blog which supports the idea that bad press is bad press-at least for the middle size companies. So in dealing with a large corporation, is it worth it to give “bad press”? Or does it really only serve to keep their name “out there” with most folks blowing off a particular case and only remembering the big name?

  1. Personally, I think that “bad press” from a credible source is indeed bad press!

  2. I know no other way to really express just how disgruntled we have been w/ our bad service. my husband thinks that the “bad press” is a better approach than just dropping their service.

  3. I agree with Montucky. One thing about blogging is that your regular readers will “know” you and give a certain weight to your opinions. In that sense it is like word of mouth from a friend rather than “press.”

On the other hand, if your blog is more like a column than a personal blog, and has a big readership of people you don’t know, then bad press might be nothing more than putting the person’s name up in lights just one more time. But none of my blogs are like that, so I think bad press on my blog is probably, in fact, bad press.
