Do you ever go through a series of nights where you just can’t sleep? Mine seem to be more of an early morning awaking and unable to go back to sleep. I always think of my great grandmother when I go through these times. I remember staying at her house when I was young. She always went to bed but got up and finished the night (probably early morning) on the couch. I am a lot like that. If I can’t sleep, I’ll lay awake praying, reading, watching tv, or maybe even some hot tea to try to help relax. I have yet to find the perfect solution. Sometimes one thing works, other times I will resort to another trick. One thing that used to work more often than not is the singing (in my mind) of a song I’ve known for a long time. I actually think it worked because years ago on a road trip in college, we stopped on the side of the road to sleep. I sang that song to myself til I fell asleep. Since then, it has been my standard “lullaby”; I use it when I am trying to get myself back to sleep. Lately though, it hasn’t been working as well. Maybe I’m getting old and will just have to finish each night on the couch like my great grandmother!

I slept really well until a few years ago, when suddenly, I’d wake very early and be unable to fall back to sleep. It was maddening and made it hard to function well the next day, but I just couldn’t seem to find a solution. I did some reading and I believe that the insomnia was hormone-related (man, it’s fun to be a forty-something woman!) and like many of the other symptoms that plagued me so much a year or two ago, the sleeplessness has improved a great deal.
I remember when I was a kid, my mom went through a stretch of time when she seemed to be up half the night. I’d wake up in the morning to find that she’d spent the overnight hours doing spring-cleaning type deep cleaning while the rest of the household slept. She had always kept a tidy house, but during those years, the place was REALLY clean! :O)

Your timing for this post is interesting. I hardly slept at all last night mostly because of a big delicious cup of coffee I had right before bed time. That usually doesn’t bother me, but last night it did, and the remedy that works best for me, which is going out for a long walk in the night, wasn’t a good option last night in the rain.

mine is probably more along the lines of what Beth says rather than coffee as I don’t drink it! I told myself to get up and get something done, but I haven’t had the energy yet. spring cleaning all night, wow, I may have to try it!

Insomnia is a part of my regular diet. I used to could count on it happening every six months, where I’d go through a period of a couple of weeks almost completely sleepless. It is not with such clockwork regularity anymore, but it still visits me often.
I have no remedy. I just make the best use of the extra time that I can, whether reading, watching movies I’d like to catch up on, writing, or whatever. Get lots of projects done this way.

guess i just need to learn to use it then instead of just laying around trying to get back to sleep!
