I actually paid $4 for a pair of New Balance socks the other day at an outlet store. I have found that even these are much better than what I've been using, so now I can see why it is better to pay the money up front and have better socks during the run!

I've found that for running (which I don't do any more) and hiking, good socks are very critical and well worth paying more for. A year ago I bought two pair of close-knit wool socks that I thought were quite expensive, but they now have over a thousand tough miles on them and they're still like new. In $ per mile they're much cheaper than the less expensive, lower quality kinds and my feet are so much better off!
