Commiserations are warranted here.

Modern computers suck, even professionals can not keep them running well.

I have two tricks for you:
1) Buy an all up system from one of the big boys like Dell, HP or Apple. These guys have sorted out most of the common problems and tend to provide all necessary software updates as needed. These are some of the elementary things that the professional is equipped to do.
2) Get a backup program like Acronis and backup the operating system disk. There is more to it than just backing up. Only backup the initial installation. Every time you want to add some software, restore the original installation add your software then do another backup. To do this you have to learn about backup and restore, unavoidable. This method has been devised to get around the issues of your computer getting polluted with the crap that is unavoidable these days. It is this pollution that degrades your computer.
