I agree with both of you! yes, montucky I think part of it is a guy thing, my son liked Tom Sawyer, and my daughter's friend's father just finished re-reading it too!

yes, Merry, my daughter is always reading but says she doesn't like what I make her read. I am thinking of trying a new approach next semester. I will give her a list of genres and allow her to choose a book from each one. She will still have to get over the "assignment" factor, but at least she can choose her own books for a while!

I really like the TS book because of the writing assignments to go w/ it. they are mostly high school level but work well w/ a little tweaking! :)

I think the sentiment is pretty normal. My daughter says the same thing - she hates reading things for school, but likes reading in general.

There were a lot of assigned books that I didn't like, but there were quite a few in high school that I did... maybe she'll like the selection better once she gets older.

It might be a just a "guy" thing, but I read that several times when I was a kid and loved it... or maybe just because I could relate to Tom... or maybe because things were different in those days, closer to the world of Tom Sawyer.
